Calling All Geriatric Millennials! It’s Time To Lock In And Revise Your Estate Plan

Bullhorn2

If you were born in the 1980s, you are not alone in feeling that young people are unfairly judging you. Generation Z is just jealous of us because we look ageless in our skinny jeans and our ankle socks. Everyone knows that’s not the real reason they are jealous of us. It is because of the luxuries we used to enjoy, the ones that were gone before Gen Z had a chance to experience them. We felt the excitement of flipping channels on the radio until a song we loved, or one that we had been missing our whole lives, played unexpectedly. We wrote notes to our friends with pen and paper. More importantly, though, our employment income enabled us to pay for necessities, plus the occasional Chicken McNugget. People younger than us live in a constant state of financial stress, with smartphones constantly demanding their attention. The only way that can get anything done is by locking in, which, according to journalists, means announcing that they will be taking a break from their constant online presence, only to make a dramatic entrance several months later to show off what they have accomplished. Gen Z can keep their amorphous jeans and their Tik Tok influencers, but perhaps we would do well to follow their example of locking in, even if we apply it to a geriatric goal like estate planning. If you are ready to lock in and spend the rest of 2025 working on your estate plan, contact a Tampa estate planning lawyer.

What Will Your Locked In Estate Plan Look Like?

In an era when no one is even sure that we will still be here next year, locking in until the end of the year is the new New Year’s resolution. What would happen if, for the rest of 2025, you decided to lock in and get as far as possible on your estate plan? It certainly would not look like a Baby Boomer estate plan.

Your first step should be to write a will; if you already have one, you should reread it and see if you want to change anything. If you do, you should write a new draft of the will and state in its text that it abrogates any previous versions of the will. Sign your will in the presence of two adult witnesses who are legal residents of Florida to make your new will legally binding.

You don’t have any money, so the rest of your year end lock in should be about your health, and not in a performative fad diet way. Instead, you should write a medical advance directive, and if you can afford it, you should buy long-term care insurance.
